Killer Whales - The Facts

The killer whale (Orcinus orca), commonly referred to as the orca, and less commonly as the blackfish, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from the frigid Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas.  Killer whales as a species have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey.

Pirates Hijack Ship

Pirates hijacked an Italian cargo ship with 18 crew on board at dawn Tuesday off the coast of Oman in an area notorious for attacks by Somali pirates.  The Enrico Ievoli, carrying a cargo of caustic soda from the United Arab Emirates to the Mediterranean, was boarded by pirates at around 0400 GMT, said the Naples-based owner of the ship, Marnavi.

Shipwreck

Battle Over Shipwreck

While Congress and the White House publicly battled over detainee policy in a new defense bill, a far more obscure fight erupted behind the scenes involving treasure hunters, doubloons and shipwrecks.  A small tweak in the House version of the defense bill — just two words and two commas — could have made it easier for a Florida-based treasure hunting firm to take custody of a $500 million trove of Spanish coins.

Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific, but are now established along the southeast coast of the U.S., the Caribbean, and in parts of the Gulf of Mexico.  How did the fish get to the Atlantic? While the exact cause is unknown, it's likely that humans provided a helping hand.

Cruise Ship Wreck Costs Could Surpass $130 Million

italy cruiseThe capsizing of the Costa Concordia cruise ship will send a tidal wave of bills at the owners that could reach $130 million -- if the ship can be salvaged.  If it is determined that the $650 million luxury liner is too badly damaged and is little more than fancy scrap, the owners -- Costa Cruises and its parent company Carnival Cruises -- will have to absorb the loss of the ship.

"They just lose," said Jaime Katz, an equity analyst for Morningstar Inc., an independent investment research firm. "The ship is gone. They will have to start over or have one less ship in that market."

That determination has yet to be made, but even a bill that big would not sink the company, experts said.

Iocal Scuba and Cody Unser Foundation

codyuCody Unser noticed a weird tingling in her legs. She dived a second and a third time, and again felt tingling. It was subtle, but it was the first new sensation that she had felt in three years, since becoming paralyzed from the chest down at age 12. 

Over the weekend of 1/14 and 1/15 ,  Cody was in town working with two girls from Riley Hospital.  The girls , their Father's , and Cecille ( Camp Riley ) were all working on their Open Water Certification. Once certified, the girls will accompany Cody on one of her Tropical Adventures.. The crew from INDY will be doing their Certification checkout Dives in California at the end of Jan. 2012
