How many underwater photography buffs do we have in the club?

What equipment are you using?

What (if different) is your equipment of preference?

And why?

I use a Nikonos V setup with an Ikelite SubStrobe Ai.

I've thought about switching to digital, but I'm happy with my Nikon pictures, and lately I just have the film processed to digital anyway. Don't order prints anymore.

My first setup was a small point and shoot with a housing I picked up in a Las Vegas dive shop. I added a jury rigged dive light with light sensing diode that strobed when it seen the flash from the camera. Without the addition I had a lot of back scatter from the camera flash. With the addition the back scatter was still there, but not as much.

Members and Friends,

It's time for the Annual IDC pumpkin carving contest. If you thought Pumpkin carving was only for kids, then you haven't done it IDC style. Full details listed below. Yes there will be prizes!

Where: Natural Springs Resort, New Paris Ohio.
NSR is an easy drive on 70 East approximately 75 miles from Indy.
Natural Springs Resort

When: Sunday October 10th at 1:00pm. NSR is very popular with campers, especially on their Halloween Weekends in October. If you are planning to make a weekend of it please make your reservations early as they will fill up quickly. Camping space is still available and you can make reservations online through their website. If you plan to camp be sure to take a lot of candy as the little campers may come trick or treating and you will not want to be caught empty handed.

Who:
Indy Dive Club members, friends & family.

The Rules:
Pumpkins should be hollowed out ahead of time as we don't want to make a big mess.
No stencils.
Pumpkins will have to pass a "tech inspection" but if you want to keep decorations and accssories as a surprise that is allowed.
You may carve and decorate with anything that you can "safely" carry with you underwater (no explosives, machetes, etc.). Carving is NOT limited to dive knives : - )
You are allowed to carve as a buddy team or individually.
Voting will commence as soon as all the pumpkins are declared "finished" probably no later than 2:00-2:30.
Anyone present at that time can vote, not limited to but including: Divers, friends, family, casual observers and anyone that can be bribed
Votes will be tabulated and "awards" of questionalble value will be presented to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place pumpkins.
Winners will have bragging rights for all eternity.

Food:
This is a bring your own food event but if you would like to bring something to share before or after the contest that is always welcome!

Other Stuff in no particular order of importance:
Meet at the area by the scuba shack.
NSR is shallow; October water temps have usually been in the low 60's.
I wear gloves and a beanie with a 5mm and have been fine.
The viz can be good or awful!
There are several places good for carving: platforms, rocky areas, the boat.
Lots of parking.
Easy entry to the water.
Admission is $17 and that includes an airfill!
There are "real" restrooms.
If you don't feel like bringing your own food there is a small camp store and snack bar.

Special thanks to Cindey Medley, Janet Grove and the rest of the Event Committee for organizing this event.

Hello Indy Dive Club members, friends, and family,

It's time for another dive event. This one is filled with all sorts of great diving. Plus this dive is kknow for a great turnout of club members. So come for the diving but take some time to get to know other club members.

Gilboa Quarry,

Address
3763 Old St. Rt. 224
Ottawa, Ohio 45875
Phone: (419) 456-3300 .
IDC has the turnaround reserved for each day (September 10, 11, and 12) of the dive event.

When: September 10, 11, & 12

Quarry Rules:

1. To maintain Gilboa Quarry as a safe and enjoyable place for everyone, we have adopted some policies for use of the facility. If you have any questions please ask at the office.
2. There will be no fishing at all permitted under any cir***stances from Gilboa Quarry property. Fishing line is an entrapment hazard, and the fish are for diver's underwater enjoyment.
3. Graffiti is not permitted on any of the underwater sights. Violators have and will be prosecuted.
4. Please observe the 5 mph speed limits in the parking lots and driveways. We are concerned for the safety of our smaller visitors, who might not be tall enough to look for cars.
5. Use lift bags for responsible practice only. Do not move the underwater artifacts.
6. Bring your certification cards.
7. Observe good buoyancy practices to avoid stirring up silt. Keep fins, stage bottles, lights, cameras, and yourself off the bottom so that others may enjoy the visibility. Several parts of the quarry are also fish nesting areas. Please help do your part to avoid disturbing the eggs.
8. You are welcome to feed the fish with trout chow (50 cents/bag), available at the office. We ask that you not feed other substances. The fish can be aggressive, so release the food and back up to give them room to feed. Do not try to handle the fish. Contact with humans removes the their protective layers, spreading fungus and infections/tumors.
9. Instructors will be asked to show proof of insurance as well as certification cards. Please bring a copy of your information for our files.
10. When visiting for the first time in each year, we ask you to fill out the long form. On subsequent visits, you may simply sign and date this form.
11. If you are diving the deep side, a dive plan is required as well.
12. Instructors will fill out a form for any classes they are teaching. The forms are available in the office.
13. Bubble-watchers are invited to play volleyball, throw Frisbee, or just sit around and socialize.
14. Do you enjoy camping? There are over 26 shaded, primitive camp sites all with easy access to diving entry points. To make your camping experience a little less primitive, we offer the convenience of clean restrooms and hot showers.
15. Visit Vertical Reality, our on-site climbing headquarters, for a ride on the zipline or a rock-climbing experience.
16. Remember to stop in the Gilboa Quarry office and pick up a T-shirt or memorabilia before you head home!
17. The quarry is equipped with men's and women's heated & air conditioned changing rooms, restrooms and showers, all handicapped accessible.
18. There are gear benches near all entries for your convenience.
19. If you have ideas for new sights or locations, speak to Mike about them.
20. When feeding our fish, please use only the fish food located in our office. Please don't use other animal or human foods. Thank you!

Food: Bring your own food and refreshments.

Food is available from the office

For the grill – burgers, brats, chicken, hotdogs

Like most people I've heard Deep6 talk about diving Vintage Gear a lot. Some might say he's a bit of an "enthusiast", and while I have always found it interesting I never had quite the same fervor for the idea. At least not until my last club dive. It just so happened that kgehring had a few vintage rigs setup for people to try. I was feeling a little shy when he first offered to let me try one but eventually I did.
Here's the picture:

Out of the 5 dives we did that day this was by far my favorite. Everything about the dive was fantastic! This was my first dive with a plate, a double hose reg, or even a steel tank. The freedom of movement was amazing, but I was truly surprised by how much more control I had over my buoyancy. This dive was easily one of my most comfortable and enjoyable dives since getting into Scuba. I still enjoy diving with my Zeagle rig, but this vintage setup had a lot to offer in its own right.

I am really glad I had the opportunity to try out this type equipment. Afterwards I had a whole new appreciation and understanding for this diving style. If you ever have the chance to try it out don't miss the opportunity! A special thanks to Karl and the Indy Dive Club for a great dive!
