Looks like these were very experienced divers.
Reading the latest article: Surviving diver talks of underwater emergency that killed his friends suggests that the two that died opted to cut a safety stop short because one was having a heart attack, but their computers evidently did record a stop.
Must have been a tough choice, risking the safety of both divers to try to get one to the surface for medical attention in time to treat the heart attack. I think as experienced as these divers were they should have known that risk was probably a loser.
I suspect the heart attack victim went unresponsive during the stop, which tempted the other diver to throw all caution to the current.
I can't imagine how I would react to a similar situation.
