Lake Superior Expedition Information
I was advised to attempt sending out the Lake Superior Expedition information in this manner. So, let us give it a try.
Location: Munising, Michigan. The wrecks are located in one of Michigan’s Underwater Preserves, the Alger UW Preserve. The area is also near the Painted Rocks National Park Lakeshore. A couple of hours to the east is Whitefish Point Maritime Museum. The Edmund Fitzgerald sank 17 miles north of here, November 10, 1975.
Dates: 20-25 July 2010. There are three days of diving scheduled, Tuesday-Friday. The original plan was to dive on Saturday with a day off on Friday for sightseeing or whatever. Anyone may dive on Saturday but that would have to be coordinated between you and the Cpt.
Cost: The charter is $75.00 per ½ day for 2 dives. Depending on the number of divers going we can book the boat for both am and pm dives. The boat is a 6 pack, so technically we can take 12 divers. Total for diving is $225.00. I have to give Shipwreck Tours a deposit in May, so I am asking $100.00 from each diver to confirm a spot. I do not need the deposit until May. You can see the web page at www. Shipwreck Tours.com.
Dives: Except for the Smith Moore, which is between 90-105 feet deep, all others lay at depths between 20-50 feet deep. Visibility is considered excellent. I scheduled the trip this late in the year so the water will be a little bit warmer (hopefully) so a good 7mm suit will suffice.
Lodging: I deliberately stayed out of scheduling other divers lodging, since there are some who would rather camp, pay less, or pay more. My recommendation is book early, since there is a firemen’s convention the last 2 days we are there. You can always cancel if you decide not to go. The Super 8 in Wetmore is only 3 miles from the dock. The cost is $79.88+tax, if you elect to stay there the total for 5 nights is $400.00 give or take, since I do not know what the tax rate is. There is no obligation to stay through Saturday after diving.
Expenses: Besides the diving and lodging, the only other cost I envision is fuel, food, and souvenirs. These can be less by sharing a ride and a room. The glass bottom boat shipwreck tour is $30.00 per person, run by Shipwreck Tours. Which, on their web site is a list and description of all the wrecks that we’ll dive?
Miscellaneous: I would like to have 12 divers go, the more the better. I would like to have a meeting in May to discuss the dives and also I am thinking about expedition T-shirts. If you have any further questions please contact me at 317-410-0280/ray4545@sbcglobal.net

What certifications are required for the dives?

Due to the depth of all except the Smith Moore, Open Water is great. I would recommend an Advanced Open Water course prior to the trip to dive the Smith Moore.
